5. Research

1. Anthropology – Studies of ethnicity and identity among Black South African townspeople. Fieldwork carried out under the direction of Professor Philip Mayer, Professor of Social Anthropology, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa in Duncan Village (East London, Eastern Cape Province) in 1972.

2. Paleontology – Scholarship member of the Transvaal Fossil Man Expedition to the hominid fossil sites of the Transvaal, with participation in excavations at Makapansgat, Northern Transvaal, under the direction of Professor Philip Tobias, Professor of Anatomy at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

3. South African Literature

a) A study of the importance of apartheid legislation as an element of latent tension in the plays of the White South African playwright, Athol Fugard. This study was carried out under the direction of Professor Doireann MacDermott, Professor of English Literature at the Universitat de Barcelona, and was successfully defended as an M.A. thesis with the title: "A Study of Tension in Athol Fugard's Port Elizabeth Plays" at the Universitat de Barcelona in February, 1982.

b) A study of the history of the confrontation between race groups in South Africa from the beginning of European colonisation in the early decades of the 17th. century up until the present day and of the effects of this ongoing conflict on the works of Black South African novelists published since the beginnings of this century. This study was carried out under the direction of Professor Doireann MacDermott, Professor of English Literature at the Universitat de Barcelona, and was successfully defended as a Ph.D thesis with the title: "The Theme of Apartheid in the Novels of Black South Africans" at the University of Barcelona in November, 1986.

4. Phonetics and Phonology – Research into aspects of suprasegmental features (segmentation, accentuation and intonation patterns) in strings of English sounds, carried out at the Laboratori de Fonètica Experimental "Pere Barnils", Estudi General de Lleida, Lleida, Catalunya, Spain.
