What we do

The most fundamental process regulated by the cell cycle machinery is the faithful replication and segregation of the genetic material. Failure to maintain the integrity of the genome often leads to the death of the cell or to chromosome aberrations, a hallmark of cancer cells.

An important aspect in the maintenance of the genomic integrity is the ability of the cell to control formation and dissolution of links between sister chromatids . During the last 10 years, the discovery and analysis of the SMC family of protein complexes, has contributed enormously to our current views of chromosome architecture and sister chromatid cohesion.

The best characterized SMC complex is Cohesin, a multiprotein ring-shaped structure able to topologically entrap the two replicated sister chromatids. Condensin is another well-studied SMC complex in all eukaryotic organisms, involved in chromosome shaping through chromatid condensation and resolution. The third essential eukaryotic SMC complex, called Smc5/6, has an essential role in maintaining the integrity of the genome. However, and despite many recent advances, its concrete function on DNA remains largely unknown.

We are currently studying the role of SMC complexes in maintaining the integrity of the genome during chromosome replication and segregation using budding yeast as a model organism.

Who and Where we are

Jordi Torres-Rosell is a Principal Investigator in the Eukaryotic Cell Cycle Lab. The Eukaryotic Cell Cycle lab is based in the Institute of Biomedical Reserach IRBLLEIDA, close to Barcelona and the Pyrenees.

The biomedical research program of IRBLLEIDA aims at studying specific biological processes at cellular and molecular levels to understand the functional alterations of key human pathologies such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, ageing and oxidative damage.
